How Early Should You Arrive for Your Flight?
As a rule of thumb, arrive 2 hours before a Schengen (domestic-European) flight and 3 hours before a non-Schengen or long-haul flight. Frankfurt gets very busy at the morning and evening long-haul waves, so allow extra time in summer and around public holidays. If you are travelling with hand luggage only and have checked in online you can arrive a little later — but never cut it close, as security and border queues are unpredictable.
Check-in and Bag Drop
Check in at the hall of your departure terminal — Terminal 1 for Lufthansa and Star Alliance, and the new Terminal 3 (opened April 2026) for most other carriers. Most airlines offer online check-in 24–48 hours before the flight, which saves time on the day; if you have hold luggage, use the dedicated bag-drop desks. Check-in and bag drop typically close 45–60 minutes before departure, so check your airline's exact cut-off, as low-cost carriers are often stricter. Not sure which terminal you need? Security and Liquid Rules
After check-in you pass through central security screening. Standard EU rules apply: liquids, gels and aerosols must be in containers of 100 ml or less, carried in a single transparent resealable bag of up to 1 litre. Larger liquids should go in your checked baggage. Have laptops and large electronics ready for a separate tray. Some lanes use modern CT scanners that let you keep liquids and laptops in your bag.
Terminals and Gates at Frankfurt Airport
Frankfurt operates Terminal 1 (concourses A, B, C and Z) and the new Terminal 3 (piers G, H and J) to the south of the runways, which opened in April 2026; Terminal 2 (former concourses D and E) closed to passengers in June 2026. The free automated Sky Line train and shuttle buses connect Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 in about eight minutes, but allow time if you need to change terminals. Your boarding pass shows the correct gate, and the live board above lists gate numbers as they are assigned. While You Wait: Lounges, Shops and Dining
Frankfurt's airside piers have an extensive range of cafés, restaurants and duty-free and designer shops. Getting to the Airport for Your Departure
Plan your journey to FRA in good time.
