Baggage rules at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) depend less on which terminal you fly from than on which airline and fare you booked. How to read your allowance
Fare names matter more than airline names. The same carrier can sell very different baggage deals on the same route depending on the fare code on your ticket:
- Basic and Light fares (Lufthansa Economy Light and the newer Economy Basic, plus similar entry-level fares from Condor and Discover Airlines) usually include no checked bag, and the cheapest tiers sometimes skip the cabin trolley too, leaving only a small personal item under the seat.
- Low-cost carriers (Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air) sell the larger cabin trolley as a paid extra on standard fares. Boarding without paying for it in advance costs more than adding the same bag online during booking.
- Full-service fares (Lufthansa Economy Classic and above, most standard Condor and Discover Airlines fares) typically include at least one checked bag, which can make a pricier-looking ticket the cheaper overall choice once you add a suitcase to a bare-bones fare.
Money-saving habits at FRA
Weigh your bag at home before you leave. Overweight fees on low-cost carriers run into tens of euros per extra kilo, and a bag just one kilo over the limit can cost more to fix at the gate than an entire extra suitcase booked ahead. Buy any extra bags online through the airline's own website rather than at the FRA check-in desk, where prices are consistently higher. And check the exact fare name on your booking confirmation against the checker above before you pack; “Economy” alone does not tell you whether a bag is included.
