What Happens After You Land
After leaving the aircraft you follow the signs through the concourse towards the exit. Germany is part of the Schengen Area, so if you are arriving from within Schengen you walk straight through to baggage reclaim with no passport check. Passengers arriving from outside the Schengen zone — for example from the UK, USA, Middle East or Asia — must first clear border control. EES Biometric Border Control at Frankfurt Airport
The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) requires biometric registration — fingerprints and a facial photo — for non-EU/non-EEA travellers arriving at Frankfurt Airport. This affects passengers from the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and most non-EU countries, and is being rolled out from 2025, so allow extra time at passport control on your first entry. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens are not affected and can use the fast e-gates.
Baggage Reclaim and Customs
Once past border control, head to the baggage reclaim hall, where the screen above your carousel shows your flight number. If your bag is delayed or missing, report it at the airline's lost-and-found (Lost & Found) desk before leaving the hall. After collecting your luggage you pass through customs: use the green channel if you have nothing to declare, or the red channel if you are carrying goods above the duty-free allowance.
Which Terminal Will You Arrive At?
Frankfurt has multiple terminals. Terminal 1 (concourses A, B, C and Z) handles Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners; the brand-new Terminal 3 (piers G, H and J), which opened in April 2026, handles most other international, leisure and low-cost carriers; and Terminal 2 (former concourses D and E) closed to passengers in June 2026, with its airlines moving to Terminal 3. Getting from the Airport to the City
The airport sits about 12 km southwest of the city centre. The fastest option is the S-Bahn (lines S8 and S9) from the regional station beneath Terminal 1, reaching Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof in around 11–15 minutes for roughly €5–6. Official taxis wait outside Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 arrivals (about €30–35, 20–30 minutes), and pre-booked transfers meet you at Arrivals.
